The Advantages of Melanotan 2 Over Melanotan 1

Melanotan 2 and Melanotan 1 comparison illustrationMelanotan 1 and Melanotan 2 are related names in discussions of synthetic melanocortin peptides. Similar names do not make them interchangeable substances, and claims for one product cannot establish the safety or effectiveness of another.

What the names refer to

Melanotan 2 is often abbreviated MT2. “Melanotan 1” is sometimes used in discussions of afamelanotide, but a retail item carrying that name should not be assumed to be an authorised afamelanotide medicine. The European Medicines Agency’s Scenesse record concerns a specific afamelanotide implant for erythropoietic protoporphyria under defined medical conditions. It is not an approval of retail Melanotan 1 or Melanotan 2 tanning products.

Why a faster-or-better ranking is not justified

Claims that MT2 produces a deeper tan at smaller doses, lasts longer, costs less or offers weight-loss or sexual-health benefits require reliable evidence relevant to the specific products. Product strength and identity cannot be established from marketing labels alone, so those claims cannot establish a purchasing or use recommendation.

Shared questions that matter

Ask what substance a source is describing, which formulation was studied, which outcome was measured and whether the evidence applies to the specific product under discussion. Cancer Research UK explains that Melanotan tanning products have not been shown to be safe and effective for this purpose and that a tan does not replace sun protection. For the site’s broader explanation, read Melanotan 2 science and risks and the Cancer Research UK guidance.
