Melanotan 2: the substance and its names
Melanotan 2, also written Melanotan II or MT2, is a synthetic peptide associated with skin pigmentation. DermNet’s explanation of Melanotan II describes its action on melanocortin pathways, which are involved in more than skin colour.
What the terms mean
MT2 is an abbreviation for Melanotan 2. Melanin is the pigment associated with skin colour; it is not another name for the peptide. Cosmetic fake tan is a different type of product.
Product formats and quantities
A vial is a container, while a pack may contain several vials. The number of containers and the quantity stated on a listing answer different questions. Neither establishes a suitable dose or a health benefit.
See M2UK’s Melanotan 2 product formats and information for the listed ranges and an explanation of pack quantities.
Pigmentation and safety are different questions
A change in skin colour does not establish protection from UV damage. Cancer Research UK advises against Melanotan injections and nasal sprays.
