Sunbeds for Winter Vitamin D: What UK Guidance Says
The UK winter creates a real vitamin D question, but a sunbed is not a recommended shortcut. The equipment emits concentrated ultraviolet radiation, while vitamin D advice also includes food and supplements. The goal is meeting nutritional needs without avoidable UV harm.
Why winter is different
NHS vitamin D guidance says sunlight in the UK is not strong enough for vitamin D synthesis from October to early March. It advises everyone to consider a daily supplement during autumn and winter and gives additional year-round guidance for people at higher risk. Our general UK vitamin D guide covers the seasonal picture.
Why a sunbed is not the answer
The NHS sun-safety page advises against sunbeds and notes that their concentrated UV can be more dangerous than natural sunlight. The mix of UVA and UVB varies by equipment; a tanning session is not a measured vitamin D prescription. A visible tan cannot tell you whether a deficiency has been corrected.
Use the appropriate route for a health concern
Dietary sources and supplements are the ordinary topics in national guidance. If you suspect a deficiency or have a medical condition, seek individual clinical advice. Melanotan products should not be presented as a vitamin D solution.
