Tanning Injection Before-and-After Photos: Limits

An appealing transformation image can be persuasive even when it lacks essential context. The viewer cannot see whether colour came from lighting, a topical product, UV exposure or an injected substance.

What a fair comparison needs

Images should use comparable lighting, camera settings and timing. A caption should identify any other tanning products and sun exposure; otherwise an apparent change cannot be attributed to one product.

Photos cannot establish quality

The image says nothing about a vial’s identity, purity or sterility. Cancer Research UK cautions against marketed Melanotan products because their safety, quality and effectiveness have not been tested.

Do not read protection into colour

A darker appearance does not remove UV risk. The NHS advises ordinary sun precautions. Our cosmetic-tan guide explains how a purely surface colour differs from protection.
