Summer 2025 Heat: UK, Europe and US Records Reviewed

A 2025 forecast cannot remain a forecast after the season has ended. The records also differ by region and dataset. This retrospective compares the UK, Europe and the contiguous United States without turning heat into a reason to seek a tan.
The UK record in its own series
The Met Office reported a 16.10°C UK summer mean for 2025, the warmest in its record at the time. Its provisional 2026 assessment has since put the following summer above that figure. A record claim must therefore carry its year and publication context.
Europe and the US used different measures
Copernicus ranked European land summer 2025 fourth warmest in its ERA5 record, 0.90°C above the 1991–2020 average. NOAA ranked the contiguous US meteorological summer 2025 twelfth warmest in its series, at 73.3°F. Neither is the same geography or baseline as the UK figure.
A warm season does not change sun-safety rules
Heat and UV are related outdoor planning concerns but not interchangeable measurements. Follow current forecasts and NHS sun-safety guidance for a day outside. For long-term UK context, our UK summer warming guide looks beyond a single year.
